Shrinkin' Violette was inspired by The Funny Company, a series of educational shorts animated and produced by the Mattel Company. The Funny Company involved a group of kids whose goal was to help people and teach them good things.
Shrinkin' Violette was a shy girl who tended to shrink whenever she became embarrassed.
The show began on September 9, 1963 and was brought on following a call by the FCC Chairman's 1961 "TV wasteland" speech for more cultural and educational children's programming. The show fit right into the Cold War way of thinking, with foreign agents to boot and even a computer-like character named Weisenheimer.
Other characters on the show were Jasper National Park who headed up the operation. Shrinkin' Violet's friends who also worked with Jasper were Buzzer Bell, Polly Plum, and Merry Twitter. Their pet, Terry Dactyl - a humorous pterodactyl, rounded out the bunch. They were visited by others including two Native Americans, Super Chief and Broken Feather. The inventor Dr. Goodheart stopped by for visits also.
Each show ended with a smiley face and their "Keep Smiling" motto. The show was credited in 1966 with reviving a six year old from a near-drowning with techniques another child had learned from the show.
It was from this show that the doll was born....as well as countless neighborhood 'detective agencies' set up by children like me mimicing their cartoon friends! :)
Her name is Shrinkin' Violette and was made by the Mattel Doll Company in 1963.
Her hair is yellow yarn and she wears a cute little lavender dress. Her pull string allows her to say:
Please Help Me Talk To People
Will You Take Care Of Me?
I Have Butterflies In My Tummy
I Wish I Was Brave Like You....
I'm Afraid of Noisy Boys
She's Shrinkin' Violette...the talking doll
Have fun...and enjoy all the really cool collectibles!
